Combined, these conditions mean that waterproofing details which might be forgiving in a drier climate have far less margin for error here. Shower pans and sloping

Underneath the tile you see, a shower floor relies on a pre-formed or mud-set pan sloped toward the drain, typically at a slight, consistent grade so water reliably moves rather than pooling. Inconsistent slope is one of the more common sources of long-term shower problems — water that lingers on the pan surface has more opportunity to find its way through grout lines or small imperfections over years of daily use. Correct slope has to be built into the substrate before any waterproofing membrane or tile goes down, which is why this stage is foundational rather than cosmetic.

Waterproofing membranes: the actual barrier

Tile and grout are water-resistant, but the actual waterproof barrier in a shower is a dedicated membrane system — either a sheet membrane, a liquid-applied coating, or a bonded waterproofing board — installed on the walls and floor before tile is set. This membrane is what keeps moisture from reaching the framing, subfloor or slab behind the visible surface. Special attention is typically paid to corners, curbs, niches and any point where plumbing penetrates the wall, since these transition points are common failure locations if not detailed carefully.

Linear drains and curbless showers

Linear (trough-style) drains have become popular in modern bathroom design partly for aesthetics and partly because they simplify slope. A center drain requires the floor to slope toward a single point from every direction, which becomes geometrically complex in a curbless shower with an irregular footprint. A linear drain positioned along one edge allows a simpler, single-direction slope, which can make achieving a clean curbless or zero-threshold entry more straightforward from a waterproofing standpoint — though it still requires careful, precise execution.

Curbless detailing: no room for shortcuts

A traditional curb acts as a physical backup barrier, containing splashed water inside the shower even if something at floor level underperforms. Curbless showers remove that backup, which means slope, membrane continuity and the transition where shower flooring meets the rest of the bathroom floor all carry more weight in keeping water contained. This is one of the areas where waterproofing detailing genuinely matters most, and it's why curbless showers are generally considered a more technically demanding install than a standard curbed shower.

Vapor, humidity and ventilation

Waterproofing addresses liquid water, but humid air is a separate challenge. Hot showers release significant water vapor into the room, and without adequate exhaust ventilation, that vapor lingers on walls, mirrors, ceilings and grout lines — creating conditions favorable to mold and gradually degrading finishes. A properly sized exhaust fan, vented to the exterior (not simply into an attic space), and run long enough after a shower to clear humidity, is a meaningful part of protecting a bathroom over the long term, working alongside — not instead of — the waterproofing membrane system.

Grout, sealants and ongoing maintenance

Even a well-executed waterproofing system benefits from grout and caulk being maintained over time. Grout is porous and can absorb moisture if not sealed and maintained, while caulk at movement joints (where tile meets tub, floor meets wall, or around fixtures) is designed to flex slightly and should be inspected periodically for cracking or separation, since these joints are common points where small amounts of water can find a path if left unaddressed.
